ALEKS is a powerful learning experience on a completely differentiated basis for kids with various math skills. In the middle school, students have completed multiple courses, and we have seen significant growth on the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) math assessment. The students are very proud of themselves!

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Lower skilled students needed more time on guided practice in math.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
4 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
65 minutes.


Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
It is a back-up resource for all of our students.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, it is at the pacing of the student.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
It is a separate class called Learning Lab.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
We created a completely new class for it.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
It is encouraged but not required.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I showed them how ALEKS works in the lab, allowing students to lead the presentation. It was wildly successful.


Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
The course is Pass/Fail.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No.

Make sure you have a teacher who can really motivate and help students as they work in the lab. It makes all the difference.
