ALEKS has been a good way for my Exceptional Children (EC) students to work at their own pace on skills that they are struggling with.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
A major issue for our school is student learning gaps.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
I use ALEKS as a supplement to my class.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
I allow my students to choose what they want to work on from their pie.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Each class period, I have at least two students working on ALEKS with myself and a teacher's assistant helping students out as needed.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I try to supplement the individual ALEKS approach with extra practice in the areas where they are the weakest.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
I encourage my students to work on ALEKS at home daily, but it is not required.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I inform parents at Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings, as well as frequent communication throughout the year as needed.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
As some of my students do not have Internet access at home, ALEKS is not used for homework assignments.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
20 percent of their grade comes from ALEKS.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
I do monitor their progress, but with the understanding that each student works differently. If they need to redo an assignment for comprehension, it may reflect poorly on their progress levels, but I consider it working and review.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I have seen my students become more positive about their progress in math and have shown higher confidence levels.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
I like to allow my students to get on ALEKS at school whenever possible. If they finish another subject, I have them working with the program as much as possible. I like the fact that my students have taken ownership of the program.
