William Koppes, Resource Specialist Teacher
ALEKS has been a superb instructional program for our 6th-8th grade intervention and excel mathematics courses. Student achievement in the courses that have utilized ALEKS over the past three years has soared. Students who have previously struggled in math have found a new confidence in their ability to learn. This program has opened up a myriad of scheduling options and opportunities that no other program provides. I highly recommend ALEKS to any school looking to be on the cutting edge of instruction.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
45 minutes.

How do you implement ALEKS?
Over the last three years, ALEKS has completely replaced my 6th-8th grade intervention courses.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, I allow the program to utilize its excellent assessment and placement process.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
My classes utilize one of our computer labs. Students come in quietly and log on to their account, while I circulate throughout the room and provide one-on-one instruction. At the end of the period, students use the ALEKS QuickTables program to master their math facts and enjoy the games.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
The one-on-one instruction provides an opportunity to gain a greater appreciation for the needs of my students and stronger teacher-student relationships.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Some of the classes are assigned a weekly amount of time and are rewarded with free time in class for their efforts.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I am able to use the data the program provides to email parents constantly. It is great!

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Average hourly progress on pie objectives is 70 percent, progress in QuickTables is 20 percent, and overall progress in the course is ten percent.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?

I use the topic and average hourly progress figure to determine grading. It has been very easy and very accurate.
