Kimberly Vitullo, Teacher
I have been using ALEKS in a sixth to eighth grade remedial math program. The students use the program about once a week for an hour and a half.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
The students I serve have extremely low in their math ability, but do not qualify as special education. I have a difficult time finding an appropriate curriculum for these students.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1 day per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
90 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
The students work on their own pace on the topics that I choose. When we are not using ALEKS we are working on other basic math skills.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
I choose a section of the pie for the students to work on. They can complete the pie in any order they choose.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students will work on the pie portion I assign to them. They also take some time to review the QuickTables.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
Not yet.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Most of my students do not have computer access.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
Parents are periodically given progress reports for their child.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I have yet to develop a way to incorporate ALEKS into our grading system, but am open to suggestions.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
I am still working on building a method to monitor progress.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Although we have not been working on ALEKS long enough to see any real progress yet, the students like the program.
