Karen Mac Wallach, Math Interventionist
I am a part-time math interventionist working with a class of seventh and eighth graders. These students work exclusively with me using ALEKS for one period and take a regular math class as well. I also teach additional classes where ALEKS is used twice a week to supplement math concepts.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Low test scores.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
The classes I teach use ALEKS two days per week with a goal number of topics to master each day.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
My classes of seventh and eighth graders use ALEKS exclusively as a supplement.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
Grades are given based on the number of topics mastered.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We send a letter home at the start of the school year.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
ALEKS is not used as part of homework.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
The grade is based on the percentage of topics mastered in class.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes, students must master at least three topics per day.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Students have become familiar with topics before they are taught in class, which helps to reduce some of their anxiety. In addition, ALEKS is teaching students to use the Explain button to learn topics, instead of helplessly waiting for a teacher to guide them through a topic. Students who are concerned about their progress like ALEKS and like seeing the topics they master fill their pie.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
If ALEKS is used exclusively with a small group of students, then offer days where they get a break from the computer.
