Wendy Lodato, Special Education Teacher
I have been using ALEKS in my sixth grade 8:1:1 classroom for the last five years. My students who have behavioral issues often beg to do ALEKS. They are motivated because it is a computer program and they are able to see their continued success by filling up their pie. Each student's experience is individualized for success. Even my students with low math abilities can be successful!

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
I found it difficult to assess what math concepts my students really knew from day to day. With ALEKS, we have proof of the concepts they truly know and those they need continued practice with.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1 day per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
55 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
I use ALEKS as math enrichment and as additional practice.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
I follow the New York State (NYS) curriculum, or with reluctant students, we do "easy" stuff first.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Each student has his or her own computer. They sign on, do review on the previous session, and then begin topics associated with the class lesson for practice and repetition.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I do mini lessons on topics that the majority of my students have difficulty with.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Students all have access but very few utilize it due to limited availability of computers at home.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
All parents are introduced to ALEKS at the beginning of the school year at Open House. Many are unable to support their children at home due to no computer access.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
ALEKS is not assigned as part of their homework due to lack of resources at home.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I use ALEKS assessments as a grade once a week.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
I usually set a goal for the number of topics to add to their pie each time students are in ALEKS.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
My students are willing and able to work on ALEKS. They can see their progress on their pie chart as well as through assessments. My students love ALEKS; it's almost like they're not doing math at all!

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Use ALEKS as much as your schedule allows, and make it part of students' math routine!
