Our school district felt that ALEKS gave our students the needed drill and practice on many math skills. We also liked the leveling aspect of it.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Our computation skills were lower than many of our other math strands.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2 hours per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
ALEKS is an addition to our regular math program.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
All students attend the lab at the same time to work on ALEKS.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
After using ALEKS, now we can often review concepts the students have already been taught by the program.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
30 minutes per week.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I send parents reports at conference times.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Yes, 10 percent.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Progress is monitored, but we have no set requirements.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Since using ALEKS, our computation scores have increased. Additionally, some students are very proud. Others do tend to tire of it when it has used for successive years.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Teachers need to be browsing among students as they use it.
