Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
I teach English Language Learner (ELL) students, and language often prevents them from using their math skills. With the Spanish option, they can focus on the math.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1 day per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
50 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
We were given the training and the opportunity to use the program with our students. I think the program is terrific, and am waiting until Florida's Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) to see the results.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
We focus on number sense at first, because that follows the textbook/curriculum. Next, whatever we study in the classroom will be what I ask the students to concentrate on with ALEKS.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
The first part of the double-block is classroom, and the second is practice. I try to schedule the computer lab at least once per week.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I haven't used ALEKS enough at this point to modify my teaching approach.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
I have started a competition for most progress per class in ALEKS. Some students do not have a computer at home, but they can use the Media Center or my classroom computers.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I have not done this as of yet.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
No, not yet.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
We haven't begun incorporating ALEKS into our grading at this point.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Not yet. I'm still very new to the program and since not all students have a computer at home, it is hard to require this.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
My students are pretty excited about the program!

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
The only thing I used so far is the personal competition (filling in their pies) and class competition.
