Linda Peters, Mathematics Coach/Chair/Teacher
I used the program as a course recovery for the students who failed the prior nine-week period. It was effective for the students who used it and I could see gains. The students liked that they could progress at their own pace. I liked the way the lessons were presented.

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Students would not do homework or complete assignments and failed the nine-week period.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
1-2 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
35-40 minutes.

How do you implement ALEKS?
We have an account for each of the Level 1 students with an additional few accounts for other levels.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
We use the district's order of instruction to align the students' lessons.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students have regular classes 3-4 days per week and then visit the math lab 1-2 times per week. While in the lab, they login and progress from where they last logged off.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Our students will be expected to login at least once with the class in the lab, and then the teacher will assign homework for additional practice from the students' home computer. This will be determined based on students' computer access at home.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We currently have 47 students waiting to get into our tutoring program. It is our goal to have parents get interested in helping their child by using ALEKS at home.

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
I haven't determined if homework will be issued through ALEKS as of yet.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
The students earn a passing grade of 60 percent if they completed a prescribed amount of work.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
I encourage students to work at home.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Some of my students liked how the lessons were taught, and most of their parents were pleased at how the students were self-motivated to do the work. I think the parents felt that they didn't need to fight the student on every bit of the learning with ALEKS.
