Kimberly Fitzgerald, Teacher
I have been very pleased with ALEKS. My students love it. They are actually learning and improving. It is also easier for me to teach with the explanation tab.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
A major issue was with students memorizing their multiplication tables.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
60 minutes.

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
We decided to implement ALEKS during math classes.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
Yes.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I now only help them when needed, as they use the "Explain" feature first.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
I encourage my students to work on ALEKS at home every day.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I am both the teacher and the parent.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
100 percent of total homework.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I use the ALEKS grading scale, but have changed the grading to be: 90-100 percent is an "A"; 70-89 percent is a "B"; 60-79 percent is a "C"; 50-69 percent is a "D"; and below 50 percent is an "F".

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
No, I don't really require regular progress.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
I have seen a lot of improvement in their learning and attitude, and have noticed that they love to watch their progress as well.

Best Practices

Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
The use of the QuickTables for math is great practice.
