ALEKS is excellent. Our students make tremendous gains on the program, especially when I have an experienced teacher using it.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Many of our special needs students do not pass the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) for math.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
We started the program with training from our Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA).
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
Some teachers follow the math curriculum for general education, while others allow students to pick and choose topics from their ALEKS pies.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Most of our teachers have their students set daily goals upon entering the classroom. Students then work on ALEKS throughout the period, with periodic mini-lessons from the teacher. Before the students leave at the end of the period, their progress is graphed.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We send letters home to parents to inform them about ALEKS.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
ALEKS comprises very little of the students' homework load.
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
Students receive a grade for the each period that they work in ALEKS.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
The ALEKS progress reports look good; I look forward to receiving our Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) results.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
ALEKS works best when teachers have students set daily progress goals, provide frequent mini-lessons, give incentives for progress, and have students graph their progress.
