Ryan Dunshie, Teacher
I use ALEKS a great deal throughout the year in our summer school program and for after-school tutoring. When students consistently show-up for tutoring and work in ALEKS, the practice they receive is indispensable. These students have made substantial progress; many have also increased their math grades by one or two letter grades.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
We were challenged by programs that lacked repetition and focused more on games rather than instruction.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
I use ALEKS as a supplement to my lecture in summer school and as a supplement to the adopted curriculum for after-school tutoring.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, however I do encourage students to work on specific topics.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
My students work in ALEKS, and I encourage them to focus on specific topics while I walk around to help them out.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
ALEKS gives me a number of extra problems to incorporate into the classroom, and displays the importance of repetition.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
I encourage students to use ALEKS at home as often as they can.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
I provide students' ALEKS login names and passwords to parents, and ask them to encourage their children to participate in the program.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
ALEKS is included in the participation grade for our summer school classes.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Many of the students who participate in our after-school program have made substantial progress in ALEKS. Many of them have also increased their math grades by one or two letter grades.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
Make ALEKS fun and competitive for students, and use that as motivation to help students to complete work in ALEKS.
