Sally Jenkins, Math Department Chair
I am very impressed with ALEKS' ability to level each individual student and provide help when needed. Many times, our low students need to gain confidence so they are able to do the work without additional hands-on assistance. ALEKS allows that.

Scenario

What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
There are so many students at different levels that it is an impossible task to address individual needs adequately. ALEKS helps to address individual needs at all levels.

How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
4 days per week

What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
Varies

Implementation

How do you implement ALEKS?
We use ALEKS as an afterschool remedial program.

Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, we do not.

How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
We have only used ALEKS as an afterschool program this year.

How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I am able to be more involved with those who work in ALEKS since many students ask questions regarding what they are working on.

How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
Nightly.

How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We did it at the beginning and had several parents observe their children working on the program.

Grading

Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Not this year.

How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
I add additional homework points to their totals depending on the amount of topics learned and time spent in ALEKS.

Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Not this year.

Learning Outcomes

Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
We had a small group this year in ALEKS and hope to have the entire school involved next year. Because of the ability to oversee each student's progress, all students are working hard. They get so excited when they tell of their progress in the program. They are very excited because they know they did the work, and it was not a tutor or teacher doing it for them.
