ALEKS provides students with the experience to self-evaluate and remediate skill deficiencies throughout their school career.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
Assessing and intervening in specific skill areas of individual students.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
5 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
Yes, Number Sense, then Measurement, Geometry, and Algebra.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
Students use ALEKS during a 20 minute intervention time.
How often are students required or encouraged to work on ALEKS at home?
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We ask parents to monitor student performance.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes. I do a baseline and then they try to improve based on the rate of improvement per day.
Since using ALEKS, please describe the learning outcomes or progress you have seen.
Students enjoy seeing the rate at which they improve. However, they need to be motivated to stay on task the longer they are engaged in the program.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
I have a student monitor who helps keep students on task and focused. The monitor helps students by demonstrating problems on slate boards and explaining examples on the ALEKS program.
