I like the fact that my students can work at their own level. The pie is a great way of showing progress as they work through the program.
What challenges did the class or school face in math prior to using ALEKS?
The challenges are gaps in basic math skills, fundamental understanding, and number sense.
How many days per week is class time dedicated to ALEKS?
2-3 days per week.
What is the average length of a class period when ALEKS is used?
How do you implement ALEKS?
ALEKS supplements classroom investigations.
Do you cover ALEKS concepts in a particular order?
No, generally I had them start in the green section working with whole numbers.
How do you structure your class period with ALEKS?
We meet in the computer lab and work for the entire class period.
How did you modify your regular teaching approach as a result of ALEKS?
I am able to provide more individualized instruction to the students.
How do you cultivate parental involvement and support for ALEKS?
We sent a letter home at the beginning of the year.
Is ALEKS assigned to your students as all or part of their homework responsibilities? If so, what part of the total homework load is it?
How do you incorporate ALEKS into your grading system?
ALEKS counts as half of the students' grades. I give points for progress.
Do you require students to make regular amounts of progress in ALEKS?
Yes, otherwise they seem to stagnate. I usually require students to complete 3-4 topics per class period. As an incentive, when students accomplish this, they are allowed to visit other websites and have some free time.
Are there any best practices you would like to share with other teachers implementing ALEKS?
My class worked toward a "100 party." As soon as everyone had mastered 100 topics in their pies, we celebrated.
